Another New Model Year.

When you are in the auto repair business you look at the new year as a new model year.  There are many new cars on the roads of Raleigh that were not there at this time last year.  I have seen them come and go…from Edsel to Prius.  Some makes and models survive and thrive and some go the way of the dinosaur!

Whatever the case may be, I have made it my life’s work to maintain and repair them all.  Some people may call me the “ultimate shade tree mechanic”.  My name is Jim Liacos.  I did not go to school specifically to repair a certain type of vehicle.  I graduated from the mechanical school of hard knocks and hope to be your auto mechanic in 2018.

As we gather together with family and friends this time of year we at Jim’s Auto Service wish you a safe and happy Holiday season and a prosperous New Year.  If you have just bought a new car or are trying to get by with your current ride for another year we will be here for you.  Merry Christmas from Jim’s Auto Service of Raleigh.

You are NOT too Busy to Keep your Car on the Road.

During the busy holiday season you may not be thinking about keeping your vehicle properly serviced.  The truth is, you need your car more than ever this time of year.  It had better start and keep running all the way to grandma’s house!  Not only is a break-down inconvenient, but in ever-changing weather it could be downright dangerous.

When was the last time you had your battery checked?  When was the last time you had your vehicle’s oil changed?  When was the last time your tires were checked?  I know…nag, nag, nag, but it is for your own good and the safety of your family.  Before it gets away from you why not have a check-up on your car?

The ultimate shade-tree mechanic in the Raleigh area is Jim Liacos.  Jim does it all on just about every make and model out there.  Jim is the owner of Jim’s Auto Service.  He and his team are Raleigh North Carolina’s complete vehicle care and maintenance specialists.  Call for an appointment today at his 3711 Tarheel Drive location (919) 824-4566.

How Cold Does it Get in Raleigh?

December is right around the corner and the coldest weather of the year is coming as well.  Just because we don’t live in New York does not mean that our vehicles are immune from freezing temperatures.  Did you know that the average low temperature in the Raleigh area is right at the freezing mark?  If you are new to the area you might not have known that.

When the thermometer hits the freezing mark, bad things may happen to your car’s battery.  Your vehicle’s battery loses one-third of its power when the temperature dips below 32 degrees.  Simply put, dead batteries are all too common this time of year.  The mantra during wintertime is prevention prevents poor performance.

If you are new to the Raleigh area and the Triangle as we call it you will quickly discover our marvelous living conditions.  It is essential to find a great auto mechanic.  The ultimate shade-tree mechanic in the Raleigh area is Jim’s Auto Service.  Call Jim Liacos and have your car ready for its first or next winter in the triangle at 3711 Tarheel Drive.  Call (919) 824-4566.

Volkswagen…a World-Wide Classic.

You would be hard-pressed to find an adult who has never heard of this classic car manufacturer.  From the Bus to the Beetle, Volkswagen has been a part of our culture for well over a half-century.  Do you own one or want to?  If that is the case, then you should be aware of some mechanical challenges that you may face.

1.  The check engine light that has become a recent problem particularly in 2013 Jettas.
2.  Oil sludge…this has reared its head in 2000 model Passats.
3.  Wiring harness shorts…particularly in the 2006 Jetta.
4.  Coil failure is a particular problem of the 2004 Passat.

Volkswagens are engineered to last for many, many years if you treat them with TLC.  In our area VW’s are treated like children by the team at Jim’s Auto Services.  Jim Liacos and his staff are Raleigh’s Volkswagen repair professionals.  No matter the model or the year you can trust Jim’s Auto Services every time!  Call them for an appointment today at (919) 824-4566.

Failing Brakes are like Fingernails on a Chalkboard.

It is a sound we never want to hear…the grinding and screeching of failing brakes on our vehicle.  How long does it take to stop when you are driving down the highways of the Raleigh area?  At sixty miles per hour it will take your car the length of a football field to come to a complete stop!

What are some of the signs of failing brakes?  The obvious one is the sudden appearance of the brake light on the dashboard.  At least we have this modern piece of technology to “dumb down” the process.  If you have driven for any length of time you instinctively know that it is taking just a bit longer to bring your car to a halt.

At the very first sign of failing brakes we know where to turn in our area.  It is the ultimate “shade tree mechanic”.  Jim Liacos of Jim’s Auto Services is the Raleigh area brake specialist.  He will diagnose and effect any and all necessary repairs to your vehicle’s brake system.  Don’t let the danger grow.  Make an appointment with Jim Liacos at his shop located at 3711 Tarheel Drive by calling (919) 824-4566.

Winterizing Your Car.

It is not too early to consider what your vehicle needs to get through the upcoming winter driving season.  We realize that winter in Raleigh is NOT winter in Boston, but it still can hit hard and fast.  You cannot take winter for granted here.  It is also NOT Miami and your vehicle will be subjected to changing weather conditions.

What are some of the emergency items that should be in your car?

1.  A working flashlight
2.  A blanket, a hat, and gloves
3.  A shovel small or large
4.  A brush with an ice scraper
5.  Non-perishable food

That would be a good start.  Now, what about your vehicle beneath the hood?  For that task, people of this area have counted on the decades of expertise from auto mechanic Jim Liacos.  At Jim’s Auto Service they are Raleigh’s premier automobile winterizing headquarters.  It will be here before you know it.  Visit the shop at 3711 Tarheel Drive by calling (919) 824-4566.

Is Your VW Ready for Winter?

Your family Volkswagen is one of your most proud possessions.  Maybe you have been a VW owner since the 1960’s and you were the envy of all your “hippy” friends with your bug or bus.  Perhaps you have been “bitten by the bug” in recent years and have just purchased your first make and model of the famous German vehicle.

Volkswagens need TLC.  They require maintenance by a trained mechanic who has worked with them for years.  The tune up, the oil change, the battery, and the brake system are unique to some of these classic cars.  Make sure that you have your prized VW managed by a true professional mechanic on a regular basis.

In Raleigh NC your home for Volkswagen maintenance and repair is Jim’s Auto Services.  Jim Liacos and his staff remember when the “bug” was in its larval stage!  Trust Jim’s Auto Services to keep your Volkswagen humming along well past 100,000 miles.  Call or stop in at their shop located at 3711 Tarheel Drive.  Call (919) 824-4566.

Change of Season - Change of Oil.

As summer leaves us for the cooler days of autumn we can also remind ourselves to do other things that impact our lives.  Change your home’s air filters.  Change the batteries in your smoke detector.  Fertilize your lawn.  Change your oil.  That’s right, if you have been driving most of the summer without an oil change then it is high time to do so!

Why are oil changes important to the health of your vehicle?

1.  Those moving parts in your engine will simply break down without lubrication.
2.  Friction + Heat equals disaster for your engine parts.
3.  Fresh oil breaks down the dirt that forms on your engine.
4.  Poor lubrication leads to poorer gas mileage.
5.  Simply put, routine maintenance will keep your car on the road longer.

Ahhh, routine maintenance.  Now, there is something that many of us put off for various reasons.  Fall is NOT the time to be doing that.  It is the routine maintenance that keeps you from having to come up with $15,000 dollars to buy a new car!  Make an appointment with Raleigh’s routine maintenance car repair pro…Jim Liacos at Jim’s Auto Services.  Call (919) 824-4566.

Hard Summer Driving Comes to an End.

So you have been a travelin’ person this summer?  If you are like many in North Carolina you have gotten in your car and explored America these last couple of months.  Of course, you know that takes a big toll on your vehicle.  It has performed like a champ throughout June, July, and some of August.  Now it is time for some auto TLC.

Here are some signs that your vehicle needs a tune up-

1.  You stop at the gas station more often.
2.  You are hearing some strange knocking noises.
3.  There is a squeal when turning the wheel.
4.  The brakes are soft and spongy.
5.  Sometimes your vehicle even stalls out.

It will not heal itself!  In Raleigh we have counted on the ultimate shade tree mechanic for decades.  We call Jim Liacos by that name because he learned to service every make and model of vehicle and is a veteran fall tune up specialist in the Raleigh area.  Call Jim for an appointment soon at 3711 Tarheel Drive.  That number is (919) 824-4566.

Plan your next day or night out with your family or loved one!

Volkswagens Everywhere.

How many VW’s do you see on the road?  There are plenty of them out there.  Americans have been “bitten by the bug” since the Volkswagen Beetle was introduced decades ago.  This great, popular German car has been at the center of mechanical controversies in recent years and it may have an impact on you.

In recent memory Volkswagen was involved in an emissions scandal that rocked the automotive world.  VW admitted to equipping more than 11 million diesel-powered cars worldwide with software designed to cheat government emissions tests.  Then there are the powertrain reliability issues in the Passat and Jetta particularly.

If you drive a Volkswagen in the Raleigh area, chances are you are sticking with your baby through thick and thin!  When your VW acts up think immediately of Jim’s Auto Service.  We are the Raleigh NC area Volkswagen repair and maintenance headquarters.  Make an appointment today at our shop located 3711 Tarheel Drive. Finding an Honest Mechanic.

When you find an honest mechanic it not only makes your day, but maybe the life of your car.  Learn diagnostic dialect.  Many spurious mechanics count on you to be clueless about what’s under the hood.  They knowingly try to snow you with terminology you don’t understand then present you with inflated bills at the end.

That is NOT acceptable!  This happens especially when you go in for a simple oil change.  Many repair shops barely break even on routine services like these.  You need to be confident in your oil change mechanic.  When he comes out with a list of recommendations be very afraid.  A radiator flush may be another term for a “wallet flush”.

This will not happen when you trust Raleigh’s ultimate shade tree mechanic.  He is Jim Liacos.  He has repaired every imaginable make and model of vehicle for over forty years.  You can trust him to repair only what is needed.  Make an appointment at his shop located at 3711 Tarheel Drive by calling (919) 824-4566.

The Summer Sun vs. Your Car.

The sun is a formidable opponent when it comes to your car.  The heart of your car is your battery.  When the sun beats down, that battery takes quite a toll.  If you think about it, what would be more likely to happen, cold weather affecting the performance of your battery or hot weather?

The truth is, it is the searing heat.  Just look at the label.  If you purchased your battery anywhere from five to seven years ago then its shelf life is just about over.  That is especially true if you live in a hot climate like Raleigh.  Over-charging as well as excessive heat also contributes to its limited life as its liquid evaporates over time.

Fear not, there is someone who has your back!  In the Raleigh, North Carolina area Jim Liacos is your ultimate shade tree mechanic.  For decades, he has been Raleigh’s battery replacement specialist.  Before you find yourself stranded on the side of the road make an appointment at his shop located at 3711 Tarheel Drive by calling (919) 824-4566.

Summer Starts Next Week.

There is something to contemplate.  Even though we have had a feel for summer heat already the official beginning is right around the corner.  Do you think you can make it through the summer of 2017 without air conditioning in your car?  If so, please don’t bother including me in your car pool this summer!

Your car’s air conditioning system is the life-blood that will make it tolerable to get from point A to point B in the Raleigh area over the next few months.  One tip that we can give you aside from having your A/C checked and ready for the heat and humidity would be to protect your car from direct sunlight as much as possible by parking in shaded areas.

The best tip of all, however is to have your vehicle’s air conditioning system checked and maintained by a real professional.  In Raleigh, that man is the ultimate shade tree mechanic.  His name is Jim Liacos.  He repairs and replaces air conditioning units in cars as well as anyone around.  Drive in to his 3711 Tarheel Drive location or call (919) 824-4566.

Time To Get to Know Your Auto Mechanic.

I think this is a really good idea.  Simply put, your mechanic is your car’s doctor.  You want to get to know your family physician don’t you?  In the same way, you want to know that the place you take your vehicle to be maintained and repaired is run by someone that you trust with your car’s life.

Consider this your formal introduction to your vehicle’s future mechanic.  We call him Raleigh’s ultimate “shade tree” mechanic because of his years working on every conceivable thing on four wheels.  He grew up just north of Boston (you might still be able to pick up the accent!).  He served in the Army in the late 60’s.

Rather than continue to describe this renaissance man we invite you to visit www.jimsautoservices.com.  After you read the biography of Jim Liacos I believe that you will want to trust him with your vehicle’s well-being.  Let Jim work on your car EVERY time.  Make an appointment at his 3711 Tarheel Drive location by calling (919) 824-4566.

Regularly Scheduled Maintenance.

Isn’t that what a visit to the dentist is?  How about an annual check-up by your family physician?  In this case, your vehicle’s regular mechanic is its best friend.  What is more frustrating than having car trouble in the middle of nowhere…not much!  Let’s avoid those hazards by having your vehicle regularly maintained.

You have many choices in the Raleigh area for regular auto maintenance.  You could go back to the dealership.  Here is what will probably happen.  You will wait longer, pay more, and some salesman will waltz over to you while you are reading a six-month old issue of People Magazine and try to get you to “trade up”.  Is that what you want?

How about this alternative.  You make an appointment with Raleigh’s premier shade tree mechanic.  He is Jim Liacos.  Jim and his crew have worked on every imaginable make of car, SUV, or pick-up for decades.  Jim’s Auto Service at 3711 Tarheel Drive is Raleigh’s car maintenance professionals.  Call for an appointment at (919) 824-4566.

Direct Fuel Injection in your VW.

You own the world’s most popular car.  Newer Volkswagens are not your grandfather’s bug. Just 10 years ago the “people’s car” introduced direct fuel injection in their fuel management system.  Let’s explain that in laymen’s terms.  This system injects fuel directly into the combustion chamber controlling the flow of fuel into the cylinder.

Just in case your head is spinning what that means is greater efficiency from your VW!  You will notice more power and less visits to the gas station.  Before this, the injectors were located in the intake manifold and fuel was injected into the cylinders PRIOR to the intake valve.  With direct injection carbon tends to build up on the intake valve which interferes with drivability.

What does this mean to you?  It means that as early as 20,000 miles some engine intake manifolds need to be removed and the carbon manually removed.  That is where Jim Liacos comes in.  He and his crew at Jims Auto Service 3711 Tarheel Drive performs this service along with Oil Changes and much more.  They are Raleigh’s Volkswagen repair experts.  Call them today for an appointment at (919) 824-4566.

Tar Heel faithful give their basketball team a joyous homecoming

(Click the link above for full article)

Repairing the People’s Car.

Volkswagen has been dubbed “the people’s car” because of its meaning in English.  The Volkswagen group is the largest in the world.  This immortal vehicle goes back to pre-World War II Germany.  In those days only one German out of fifty owned a car.  It was clear that there was a market for an inexpensive compact car.

Well, this innovation caught on world-wide.  After the war, Volkswagen became the symbol of West Germany’s regeneration.  In 1961 VW expanded its product line with four new models.  Then in 1969 a larger type was introduced.  Today the Volkswagen line continues to expand its presence around the globe.

If you are a proud owner of one of these reliable vehicles you want to keep it in tip-top condition.  In Raleigh that location is 3711 Tarheel Drive.  That is the home of your Volkswagen repair experts…Jim’s Auto Service.  Just as we are all proud of our ‘Heels, take pride in your ride and have your VW maintained by Jim Liacos.  Call (919) 824-4566.

"Congratulations to the University of North Carolina Tar Heels men's basketball team... now NCAA champions for the SIXTH time! Only two other schools hold more national titles than the University of North Carolina -- UCLA, who holds 11 titles and the University of Kentucky, who holds 8 titles."

Brake Check Time.

Next to the engine itself and the tires, what could be more important than your vehicle’s brakes?  Your safety depends on them.  Now that winter is pretty much over it is time to make sure that your brakes are ready for increased highway driving in warmer weather.  When was the last time that a professional took a look at them?

Often, it is painfully obvious that brake repair is a priority.  When you hear that awful “squealing noise” when you put your foot on the pedal do not hesitate another day.  A less obvious, but important sign would be a “mushy” feeling when you apply the brakes.  We may convince ourselves that this is not serious, but it probably demands your attention.

Brakes do not always adhere to a schedule.  Your owner’s manual may tell you the number of miles that are “projected” between a brake replacement.  Safety is at stake here.  Trust Raleigh’s vehicle brake replacement expert Jim Liacos.  Stop by his shop located at 3711 Tarheel Drive and have your brakes checked…or call for an appointment at (919) 824-4566.

How About a Break on Your Car Repair?

We are coming out of winter and it is an exceptional time to have your vehicle maintained.  I can just about guarantee you that if you have not had a mechanic look at your car in 2017 something needs to be done.  Maybe it is only an oil change, but getting on top of it now could save you countless dollars and frustration later.

One of the things that causes us to put off the inevitable is price.  We think…I’ll just wait another thousand miles until I really need vehicle maintenance.  Meanwhile, people are driving around Raleigh just waiting for something to go haywire under the hood.  What if you could get a “deal” on your next auto maintenance or repair bill?

You deserve to save money!  The ultimate vehicle mechanic in Raleigh agrees.  He is Jim Liacos.  For more than 4 decades he has been repairing every possible vehicle on the road.  Go to the website www.jimsautoservices.com and take a look at the specials.  Then make an appointment at Jim’s Auto Service located at 3711 Tarheel Dr. by calling (919) 824-4566.

When to Flush.

No, we are not talking about that…it’s your radiator that is the subject of this article.  Your car’s engine coolant will cause an engine to overheat.  It’s the coolant’s job to circulate through the engine and the radiator.  When summer comes that is what will keep your engine running at full capacity.

What are some of the signs that your vehicle needs a coolant flush?

1.  Seeing your temperature gauge go up.
2.  A puddle of antifreeze underneath your car.
3.  You hear a grinding sound.
4.  Rust is visible in the coolant.
5.  Steam emanating through the hood.

That last one should get your attention!  This is a good time of year to pay attention to this potential problem.  When the time comes, make an appointment with Raleigh’s ultimate “shade tree mechanic”.  Jim Liacos of Jim’s Auto Service is the answer for all of your car maintenance needs.  Make an appointment or drive in to 3711 Tarheel Dr. by calling (919) 824-4566.

Put Your Car on the Clock.

Say what…put your car on the clock?  What do we mean by that?  Well simply this…in the spring and fall we are governed by the clock.  We are about to spring forward after falling back late last year.  You even schedule your dental cleanings and change your smoke detector batteries bi-annually.  Why not put your auto maintenance on the clock as well?

With spring right around the corner, when was the last time you had your battery checked?  When was the last time you had your oil changed?  What about the air filter and other internal parts that need to be checked periodically?  If you stay on schedule then chances are you won’t end up stranded on the side of the road.

For my money, give me an auto mechanic who has grown up “under the hood”.  One who has seen them come and go for decades.  Give me someone who has worked on Studebakers and hybrids.  Raleigh’s ultimate shade tree auto mechanic is Jim Liacos.  Let’s spring forward and make an appointment at his shop located at 3711 Tarheel Drive by calling (919) 824-4566.

Maintaining Your Engine.

Maintaining a car’s engine is like proper health care and diet for your body.  If your vehicle’s engine is neglected it will give up on you.  No one wants to be stranded on the roads around Raleigh in the winter.  Why not use common sense and treat your car’s motor like your own internal organs?

People don’t know what to pay for a simple tune-up anymore.  Spurious auto mechanics around the country are charging as much as $1000 for a simple tune-up!  Step 1: Check your owner’s manual.  What are the scheduled tune-ups for your particular vehicle?  Just as you should not ignore them they don’t need to be done TOO frequently either.

Step 2 is obvious.  You pick up the phone and call Raleigh’s ultimate shade tree mechanic, Jim Liacos.  If you don’t know him already then go to www.jimsautoservices.com and fill out an estimate right on his website.  Jim has spent four decades tuning up vehicles in the Raleigh area.  Give him a call today at (919) 824-4566.

An Auto Mechanic Who Really Does It All!

So many car mechanics specialize in one make of vehicle when it comes to repair.  We see German auto repair, foreign cars in general, or “we specialize in trucks”.  When you are driving a specific type of vehicle that may be okay, but give me someone who is adept at repairing everything on four wheels.

There are hybrids and diesels and mini-vans and trucks all over the Raleigh area highways and bi-ways.  If you see a mechanic that you are confident has all the knowledge to do the job right you want to adopt that person to do all of your preventative maintenance in 2017.  That man really does exist in this age of specialization!

He is the ultimate shade tree mechanic, Jim Liacos.  You see, Jim learned all about the repair and maintenance of cars and trucks decades ago.  Unlike some of the young guns who just go to school to learn about a specific type, he has become proficient at repairing nearly all of them.  He really is Raleigh’s true full-service auto mechanic.  Call him for an appointment at his shop on 3711 Tarheel Drive at (919) 824-4566.

Winter and Your Vehicle in Raleigh.

Raleigh is not Milwaukee, but it’s not Miami either.  Wintertime can and will take a toll on your vehicle if you are not prepared.  Have you had your coolant checked recently?  It could really be out of whack if you have too much water and too little antifreeze proportionately.  When temperatures drop below 32 degrees that water in your radiator will freeze.

Maybe you have neglected your windshield wipers.  If we have a rainy, slushy, snowy spell they will be in almost constant demand.  You had better be sure your car’s wiper blades are in tip top shape.  Have your tires checked as well.  A sudden cold snap will suck some of the air right out of them and the tread needs to be as close to new as possible.

There are probably about 100 things that can inhibit your driving this winter.  There is one way to avoid all of that - preventative maintenance from a mechanic you have counted on for the last 40 winters.  His name is Jim Liacos.  Jim is the Raleigh area’s ultimate “shade tree mechanic”.  He doesn’t have the overhead so he keeps his prices lower.  Drive into his shop at 3711 Tarheel Drive or call for an appointment at (914) 824-4566.
